Blue poppy anemone
The genus anemone is conformed by 120 species of perennial plants or herbs of the buttercup family native to the eastern Mediterranean area and Asia minor . Anemone comes from a Greek word "anemos" that means wind so it is also called "windflower" (it has fruits that often bear long hairy styles that aid their distribution by the wind) . Another name they're called is Lily's of the Field. Medicinally anemones have been used for preventing fever, to heal bruises and freckles, treat cramp pains, menstrual problems, etc.
Anemones have a radical deeply cut set of leaves and an underground rootstock. This herb has white, red, blue or even yellow flowers. These windflowers are grown throughout the world but they're more likely to occur in meadows and woodlands of the northern hemisphere. For their beauty many of the species are among the favorite garden plants, but there is a special kind of anemone that sticks out from the rest: Anemone Coronaria is also called Poppy Anemone. This species gives flowers of various colors, but the most common ones are crimson, scarlet, purple, white and blue. There are 2 blue anemones: Anemone blanda and Blue Poppy Anemone.
Blue poppy anemone also called "Mr. Fokker".- First of all it is called poppy anemone because of it's poppy-like blossom. The stem grows up to 40 cm. and can hold one or two flowers depending on the type. It's shorter than the blue poppy that can grow up to 1.5 meters.
The blue poppy anemone is easier to grow compared to the blue poppy because it doesn't demand the climate and soil that the blue poppy demands. The blue poppy anemone requires a sunny spot to grow and they do so much better in a loamy soil enriched with well-rotted manure. They're easy to raise form seed and take from 6 to 10 weeks to bloom and they usually do so in springtime, although depending on planting time they can also bloom in summertime. The flowers life is about 5 to 6 days normally and can last up to 10 days if given the required attention.
To get better and faster growth they should be planted 5 cm. deep and 10 cm. apart.
Their sapphire blue flowers with black centers have been revered in the paintings of many Dutch masters.
The blue poppy anemone is very suitable for pots and containers and also as a cut-flower. They are easier to grow and don't require all the attention that blue poppies do, non the less their flowers are as beautiful and intriguing. If you are into gardening blue poppy anemones are a great choice and they'll make your garden a beautiful sight to look at.
