Blue poppies flowers

There are 3 species of blue poppies known these days and many hybrids, and the way you can tell one from another is by their flowers. Each one of the species and hybrids gives a special and different flower. The difference can be size, type of blue, shape, etc. Although the type of blue depends on the acidity of the soil; the more acid the flower is, it will bloom in a deeper blue color.

M. Betonicifolia: the best known of the 3 species, gives 4 to 5 flowers per stem. It's stamen and pistil is yellow and the flower usually blooms sky blue. When fully grown it's 4 petals open and you can barely see the cup shape. The pistil stands out perpendicular to the petals.

M. Simplicifolia: the stem can only gives a single blossom. The flower is violet-blue and 2 to 3 inches in diameter. This flower is not very popular and it seems that it's not cultivated anymore.

M. Grandis: this species has the biggest flowers, 4 to 5 inches in diameter. It has a wonderful, blue color shot with light violet. The pistil is also yellow. This flower is a little bit more cupped than the M. Betonicifolia flower.

These are the species of Meconopsis. The ones below are the hybrids or M. x sheldonii.

M. "Bobby Masterton": this flower is very similar to the one of M. Betonicifolia except that the cup shape is more noticeable and the pistil isn't yellow, it is green.

M. "Mrs. Jebb": the flowers 2 to 3 inches wide and make a perfect cup shape. The petals are all close together. The pistil is deep blue-violet color.

M. "Crewdson Hybrid": this flower has 4 large petals, they are separate on from another and tend to cure at the end of the petal. They have yellow pistil.

M. "Barney's Blue": this one is very easy to recognize. The flower consistently opens dark pink, then it lightens in color till it changes to blue. And the pistil is also yellow. The petals are not that big and have a more rounded shape.

M. Fertile Blue Group: this plant hasn't been named yet. The flowers are larger than in M. Lingholm and have a cup shape. It's petals are very large and are not as rigid as the other flowers.

M. Lingholm: maybe the most known hybrid. It's structure is similar to the M. Grandis except that it's petals are not as rigid and the pistil is light brown. It's size is also around 3 to 4 inches wide.

M. Horridula: transparent dark blue is the characteristic color of this flower. It's smaller than the other ones, but non the less as beautiful.
